Laughing Gull by Simon Aredondo

Location: Monkey Cup, 1728 Amsterdam, New York, NY 10031

Painted: June 12, 2016

About the Bird: Despite their name and proclivity to humans (and their trash cans), Laughing Gulls breed in isolation along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast salt marshes—habitat that will likely be consumed by sea-level rise. Smaller flocks of the species have begun to move inland, and with climate change Audubon's projections show the bird's range continuing to expand. Still, they won't escape threats like more frequent spring heat waves and drought.

About the Artist: Simon (sfa) Aredondo is a Dominican-American street artist, writer, and jack-of-all-trades. He was raised in the Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of Manhattan and has been creating art for more than two decades. His reason for painting a Laughing Gull was simple: To please his son, who loves gulls.
